The Delhi government has just announced a new and exciting way for commuters to travel – boat rides on the Yamuna River. The Delhi government and the Centre signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday to develop water tourism along the 4-kilometer Sonia Vihar-Jagatpur stretch of the Yamuna.
Cabinet Minister for Irrigation and Flood Control, Parvesh Sahib Singh, took a boat ride from Boat Club to Chhath Ghat to mark the occasion, showcasing the potential of the new waterway.
Speaking at the event held at Asita Park, Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena expressed plans for expanding the facility, which aims to decongest Delhi’s roads while providing a fresh travel alternative for the city’s residents.
This initiative marks a significant step toward integrating river, road, and metro transportation. The government is also exploring a public-private partnership (PPP) model to enhance water transport in the region.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that the project would give Delhi a modern, eco-friendly makeover. She highlighted the introduction of electric-solar hybrid boats, which would promote sustainable travel and help beautify the Yamuna’s surroundings.
