A recent report by Parliament's home affairs committee has emphasized the untapped tourism potential of the uninhabited islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, suggesting they could become key eco-tourism destinations. The committee has urged the Ministry to explore the opportunities these untouched islands offer, especially in light of a significant surge in tourist visits to the region.

Uninhabited Islands Set for Tourism Development

According to the report on the demand of grants tabled in Parliament last week, there has been a notable increase in tourism to the Union Territory (UT) of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The number of tourists visiting the islands nearly doubled in 2024, reaching 721,000, compared to 332,000 in 2023.

Representatives from the region informed the committee that after the inauguration of the Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Veer Savarkar International Airport in August 2023, the airport’s capacity to handle passengers surged from 0.75 million to 5 million passengers per annum. This has played a crucial role in accommodating the influx of tourists.

Eco-Tourism Potential in Uninhabited Islands

The committee highlighted that several uninhabited islands in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago boast pristine beaches and rich biodiversity, making them ideal candidates for eco-tourism. These islands, largely untouched by human development, offer natural beauty that could attract tourists seeking sustainable travel options.

The report recommends that the UT administration seriously consider the development of tourism activities on these uninhabited islands to cater to the growing number of visitors. Eco-tourism initiatives could focus on sustainable tourism practices that respect the environment while providing visitors with the opportunity to experience the region’s natural beauty.

Key Factors Driving Tourism Growth

The increase in the number of tourists to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands can be attributed to several factors, including improved infrastructure and enhanced connectivity. The expansion of Veer Savarkar International Airport has made it easier for tourists to access the islands, contributing significantly to the rise in tourist numbers.

In addition to this, the increasing global focus on sustainable and nature-based tourism has also played a role in attracting eco-conscious travelers who seek out destinations that offer a combination of adventure and environmental preservation.

The Future of Eco-Tourism in A&N Islands

The potential for eco-tourism in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is immense. With careful planning and development, the uninhabited islands can be transformed into sought-after destinations without compromising the natural habitat. The key will be ensuring that tourism growth is sustainable, with a focus on preserving the pristine environments and the rich biodiversity that make these islands so unique.

The development of these islands as eco-tourism hotspots could also contribute significantly to the local economy, providing employment opportunities and fostering the growth of sustainable tourism businesses in the region.

As tourism continues to rise, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are poised to become a major eco-tourism hub in India, attracting visitors from around the world who want to explore the unspoiled beauty of these uninhabited islands.
