A fatwa issued by the All India Muslim Jamaat has put TVK president Vijay in the spotlight. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi criticized Vijay for allegedly portraying Muslims as terrorists in his films and inviting gamblers and liquor consumers to an Iftar party, actions that have angered Tamil Nadu’s Sunni Muslim community.

Razvi Bareilvi told ANI, “Vijay’s political outreach to Muslims is overshadowed by his negative portrayals in films and his choice of Iftar guests. Sunni Muslims demanded a fatwa, and I have advised them not to support him.” The fatwa has intensified scrutiny on Vijay’s leadership of the TVK.

Concurrently, Vijay is challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 in the Supreme Court. The court, hearing related cases, expressed alarm over violence in Murshidabad, West Bengal, and considered staying provisions like non-Muslim inclusion in Waqf Boards and collectors’ authority over Waqf property disputes.

The Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, suggested an interim order to preserve court-declared Waqf properties and limit non-Muslim roles in Waqf governance. Vijay’s dual controversies—his Iftar event and legal battle—highlight the complex interplay of religion, politics, and law in Tamil Nadu.
